It's so easy to get up and running with your first Windows Phone app!  Just pick up the FREE toolkit from Microsoft, register at AppHub, and start checking out some fundamental tutorials.
Rick Waldon, developer of the AlphaDrops game for Windows Phone, posted this video recently demonstrating his port of the game from Windows Phone 7 to Windows 8 using 90% of the original code.  Waldon is using the Samsung Series 7 Tablet that Microsoft distributed to developers at their BUILD Conference last year.

The thing that took me the longest was figuring out how to adapt the game to the larger screen. To bring over a screen from WP7, I simply copied the .XAML and .CS file and then made a few code changes. There are some functions I had to change and there where a few things in the XAML that caused my W8 App to be unstable(Microsoft will no doubt fix this) but once I worked around them, it was smooth and easy.
